Collection and Activities of Urasoe Art Museum
Okinawa was once an independent kingdom called Ryukyu. Through exchanges and trade with China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asian countries, it developed a distinct Ryukyu culture. Lacquer art is one of them.
In Ryukyu, worship and ritual items and furnishings for domestic use, as well as tributary offerings presented to China and gifts to Japan’s shoguns and regional daimyos were produced by order of the royal government. In modern Okinawa, private workshops have played a central role in creating a variety of lacquerware and designs that change with the times, such as souvenirs for Japanese tourists and commemorative pieces for U.S. servicemen after World War II.
This museum collects lacquerware that is unique to Asia and representative of the Ryukyu Kingdom and modern and contemporary Okinawa. In our permanent exhibitions, we offer a wide-ranging exhibit and introduction to Ryukyu lacquer art and lacquerware culture based on various themes.
